The MSFL Executive Board has decided to award each team that were scheduled to play the Shorewood Monarchs and the Terre Haute Wildcats victories by forfeit with a 2-0 score.  The Indiana Mustangs will benefit by gaining a forfeit win for a game that was scheduled to take place on September 7 at home but this will now serve as an additional bye week for the team.  The Board also said that if a team fills the week with a game then that would be acceptable but stats against teams outside of the MSFL will not be counted toward MSFL stats.

In the opening week of league play for the Mid States Football League (MSFL), the Indiana Mustangs will host the Chicago Mustangs on Saturday, July 13th at the beautifully-renovated, Arsenal Technical High School. Tech’s football stadium features a new turf field that was donated by the NFL following the 2012 Super Bowl. Gates open at 6 PM and kickoff is scheduled for 7 PM.

Indiana will be looking to avenge last year’s loss to Chicago even though both teams made the MSFL playoffs last year. Both teams are members of the prestigious Mid States Football League (MSFL) which will feature twenty of the top semi-pro teams in the Midwest covering Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin.

The Chicago Mustangs will feature former Illini quarterback, Juice Williams at the helm of the offense. Williams recently wrapped up his second season with the Chicago Slaughter of the professional Indoor Football League. The Slaughter roster also included two Indiana players in Jerimy Finch (Warren Central HS and Marian) and Madison Miller (Arlington HS and Indiana State). The Indiana Mustangs will be led offensively by standout quarterback Eric Hooks (North Central HS and St. Francis) , and he will have a host of talented receivers to choose from including one of the league’s top receivers last year Gavin Wisel (Trine U.), Jeff McClure (Brownsburg HS, Marian U.), Paul Carter (Northwest HS and St. Francis), James Sharp (Arlington HS) and speedy newcomer Jasper Johnson (Ben Davis HS).

Defensively the Mustangs will be led by former Buffalo Bill player Madison Miller, Jerimy Finch, three former Hoosiers – Stefan Osby, Darius Johnson and Freddy Jones and former Marian All Conference players Dontae Crooks (Arsenal Tech), Jovan McCray and Wm Stubbs (Cathedral HS) along side two MSFL All Conference defensive ends, Michael Cupp (Danville HS) and Eric McKinney (Washington HS).

The Mustangs are still looking for quality offensive linemen, dedicated volunteers and business sponsors. Advertising opportunities are available ranging from $50 – $2,500. For more information, please contact James Stamper (765-681-1327) or Rich Castanias (317-379-4669).

The Indiana Mustangs and Indiana Generals of the MidStates Football League (MSFL) hosted a double-header on Saturday at Roncalli High School with the Indiana Cutters and Marion County Crusaders who are members of the Interstate Football League (IFL).  The Mustangs defeated the Cutters 26 – 20 while the Generals dismantled the Crusaders 31 – 0 before the game was called late in the third quarter.

The Mustangs took their opening possession quickly downfield inside the Cutter red zone before back-to-back bad snaps moved the Mustangs back to midfield.  On the following play, the Cutters defense picked up another bad snap and returned the ball forty yards for the Cutters first score giving the Cutters an early 6 – 0 lead.

The Mustangs offense scored on the next possession when quarterback Eric Hooks (North Central HS; St. Francis) connected with former Ben Davis receiver Jasper Johnson for a fifty-five yard touchdown reception tying the score 6 – 6.  Late in the second quarter, the Mustangs defense led by former Marian-standout Dontae Crooks and three former IU players, Fred Jones, Darius Johnson and Jerimy Finch shutdown the Cutters offense.  The Cutters final drive of the first half ended in an interception by all-conference safety Stefan Osby.  On the final play of the first half, Hooks connected again with Jasper Johnson for a twenty-eight yard touchdown reception, tying the game 14 – 14 at halftime.

In the second half, Mustangs cornerback Donyea Robinson had an interception which set-up the Mustangs next score giving the Mustangs a 20 – 14 lead.  Early in the fourth quarter, Hooks hit former Marian receiver Jeff McClure for the Mustangs final score of the game providing a 26 – 14 lead.  The Cutters took their next possession inside the Mustangs red zone before turning over the ball.  The Cutter defense showing no signs of quit held the Mustangs offense to three downs, forcing the Mustangs to punt from the goal line.  Following another bad snap, the Cutters ended up with the football on the Mustangs two-yard line.  The Cutters scored on the following play narrowing the score to 26 – 20 with four minutes remaining in the game.  On the Mustangs final drive, Hooks connected on third down with his college teammate Paul Carter (Northwest HS; St. Francis U.)  as Carter worked his magic for a critical Mustang first down.  Hooks left the game with an injury forcing Paul Carter to take over at the helm.  Carter proceeded to run for two more first downs sealing the victory.

The Mustangs resume practice at Riverside Park this Wednesday at 6:30 pm.  The Mustangs are still looking for offensive linemen, dedicated volunteers and corporate sponsor for this season.  Advertising opportunities are available ranging from $50 – $2,500.  For more information, please contact either Rich Castanias (317) 379-4669 or James Stamper (765) 681-1327.

The Indiana Mustangs pulled off an win against the Indiana Cutters in preseason action on Saturday, June 15. The 26-20 win was not pretty but when the offense and defense started clicking for the Mustangs, the Cutters had trouble moving and keeping the ball. Quarterback Eric Hooks accounted for 4 touchdowns leading the offense. The Mustang defense and special teams combined for 5 takeaways (2 INT, 3 FUM REC).

As the game progessed, the Mustangs seemed to gel better on all sides of the ball. While the players are happy with the win, the guys believe there is room for improvement and expect to get better as the kickoff for the MSFL season approaches. The team is working on scheduling one more preseason game before the season opening against the Chicago Mustangs.
